Travelling by rail is often ideal for offering up some excellent scenery and photo opportunities due to a combination of inter-connectivity to local cities, and proximity to cultural landmarks.

Earlier this month, a photo of a Japanese couple travelling by train even went viral, as the couple kindly ducked out of the way to allow another passenger to take a picture of the iconic Mt Fuji.

To discover some of the most scenic train journeys across Japan, the experts at online travel site JR Pass analyzed a selection of the country's most popular scenic train routes, comparing factors such as ticket price, popularity, traveller reviews, and journey time in order to form their rankings.
